Sun shadow analysis is typically requested by Planning Authorities when there is a concern that a proposed building will overshadow an existing property. Alternatively, a shadow analysis can be submitted with a planning application to prove from the outset that a proposed development will not impact negatively on neighbouring buildings.
Using survey data and a full set of Architects House Plans and Drawings of the proposed and existing buildings, we create a 3D model of the proposed development and the adjoining properties. We then replicate the path of the sun for that site at various times during the year e.g. 9am, 1pm and 5pm on Mar / Sep 21st, Jun 21st and Dec 21st. These images (samples shown here to the right) give the planner an accurate definition of the extent of the shadows cast on the adjoining properties and allows them to objectively decide if overshadowing occurs or not.
We can also generate more detailed 3D images of a particular elevation of an adjoining property that may be overshadowed by a proposed development. This shows the extent of the shadows cast on the adjoining building and more accurately illustrates if loss of light occurs within that adjoining property. We provide this service to private clients and Architects in Cork and throughout Ireland.
